In quite shocking restaurant news yesterday, celebrated Winnipeg restaurant Tallest Poppy announced that it would be closing on May 26...sort of.
May 26, 2023, will be the restaurant's final day of regular service in its long-time home at the base of the Sherbrook Hotel. Despite the closure of its dining room, Tallest Poppy will continue offering its full food menu by way of take-out and delivery service apps daily as well as its catering services.
This makes the news somewhat bittersweet, but after being in operation for nine years and becoming a important hub for many in the arts, music, and queer communities (and all intersections of), the atmosphere of Tallest Poppy will most definitely be missed.
Owner Talia Syrie says that despite ceasing its front-of-house service, she is plannning to reboot event programming in its dining room come the fall.
"It has been a wild 9 years being part of the West Broadway community. You’ve gone to the mats for us so many times and for that I will always be deeply grateful. You have been welcoming and generous and funny and weird and kind and fierce and we love you," reads the restaurant's Instagram post.
The restaurant will still move forward with its next scheduled drag brunch, which is organized by Synonym Art Consultation, on Sunday, May 27. Following the drag brunch there will be an official closing party in the evening. Details about the party and how to confirm attendance will be released soon.
Tallest Poppy is located at 103 Sherbrook St. and open for breakfast, lunch and dinner from Tuesdays to Sundays. The restaurant's final day of dining room service will be Saturday, May 26, 2023.
