After finding success with the popular, award-winning website TheKitchenMagpie.com, professional food blogger Karlynn Johnston recently released her first cookbook Flapper Pie & a Blue Prairie Sky with Appetite: Random House. The wife of one, mother of two, fur baby mama to three, and bourbon drinker by night can usually be found avoiding anything that has to do with cleaning her kitchen, like dining at these places in Edmonton.

The cookbook can be found on shelves now at all major retailers.

Breakfast

I am currently obsessed with the brunch at Chartier, a new-ish restaurant in Beaumont, which is actually closer to where I live than downtown Edmonton is. The breakfast poutine is something I dream about, thanks to the truffle hollandaise, and their Scotch eggs are a magnificent blend of flavours that turned me into a Scotch eggs lover. Their cinnamon buns? Beyond epic.

Lunch

Everyone seems to (understandably) forget--in their haze of sugary macaron love--that Duchess Bake Shop has an excellent lunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. I personally suggest one of Giselle’s decadent quiches, followed by the key lime tart, which happens to be my favourite dessert in all of Edmonton.

Dinner

Boy, you be in for a honky-tonk-stomp of a good time with chef Lindsay Porter at Have Mercy, an unabashedly Southern-themed dive that serves up the best fried chicken in town–and it comes with a doughnut!

Drinks

North 53. Five words: the Smoke and Oak Fashioned. This gin-based cocktail is my favorite cocktail ever, and let me tell you, I’ve done a lot of research.
