After bursting onto the Canadian music scene in 2019 with a successful debut album and a sprinkling of well-received singles in the time since, Calgary-based indie-rock band Sunglaciers unveiled their first full-length follow-up LP on March 25.
Since then, Subterranea has received rave reviews from critics and fans alike for its unique blend of indie-rock melodicism, post-punk experimentation, and captivating lyrics that examine the strange realities of our time, while remaining optimistic for the future.
We recently had the opportunity to catch up with the talented Calgary quartet, who took some time to dish on a few of their favourite food and drink spots in their home base.
Breakfast
Nyssa: Bea's in Inglewood is great. You get your food really quick, the quality is very high, and there's always a place to sit. They also have a lot of options for people with dietary restrictions! [My favourite] dish is the smoked salmon Benny.
Lunch
Evan: Anyone who knows us knows we're a sandwich band, and Alumni on 17th has our hearts. Alumni has the heartiest, richest sandwiches in the whole land. They make a great margarita and their sides are to die for. [My favourite] dish is the hot chicken sandwich.
Dinner
Mathieu: We're basically the house band at Palomino Smokehouse these days and we love to chow down on their BBQ on show nights. Great ribs, delectable pulled pork, and every dish comes with two sides! We love their cornbread and bacon wrapped corn cobs, oh yes. [My favourite] is the pulled pork sandwich with simple greens and baked beans.
Drinks
Kyle: Highline Brewing is a cozy little spot in Inglewood with a great stage and some of the friendliest staff in the world (hi Jeff!). They brew some really delicious and interesting beer, have a great dog-friendly patio, put on all sorts of shows from free jazz to drag to punk, and Andrew makes some bomb-ass hot dogs. [My favourite] brew is the Wabi Sabi Yuzu Sour.
