Just like with our food and our clothes, our taste for cocktails change with the seasons, and something light and refreshing just doesn't cut it when there's snow on our boots. At Edmonton's The Common, mixologist Landon Cann opts for aged spirits and herbal liqueurs for warming and comforting wintertime cocktails. If you don't have those things on hand, you can also use his recipe for New York Sour to make a rich and complex cocktail at home.
1 1/4 oz. Bourbon
1 oz. lemon juice
3/4 oz. simple syrup
1/2 oz. egg white
red wine, enough to float
Add bourbon, juice, syrup and egg white to a shaker filled with ice (make sure to put the egg white in only after ice is added). Shake, and strain into a double rocks glass filled with ice. Layer red wine by slowly pouring it over the back of a barspoon.
