With an impressive discography that spans almost two decades, the career of alt-country singer Justin Rutledge has been remarkable, to say the least. Since 2004, the Juno Award-winning artist has released eight albums and perform at venues across North America and Europe.
While the pandemic has interrupted Rutledge’s ability to tour and perform (in-person), it has afforded him the opportunity to take time to look back on his career by way of his upcoming album Islands, which is set to release in full on March 26. In addition to a selection of re-recorded songs from throughout his expansive discography, Islands also features the studio debut of crowd favourite "Jellybean".
“I’ve always been cautious about recording "Jellybean" on an album because it is such a ‘live’ song,” says Rutledge. “I’ve tried a few times in the past, but it never made the cut. I think I finally captured the essence of the song with this recording."
We recently had a chance to chat with the talented singer-songwriter to discover all of his favourite places to eat and drink in his home region of Prince Edward County.
Breakfast
Located on Town Hil’ in Picton, the Lighthouse Restaurant at the Picton Harbour Inn has been a local favourite for decades. Dinner
Situated in the idyllic Hamlet of Bloomfield, Flame and Smith serves up food cooked exclusively over a wood fire. This sustainably-minded restaurant is an absolute must for folks in need of unique culinary experience.
Sit at the bar and chat with Rodney as he serves up oysters from the raw bar, or ask front of house manager Cam what local wine would pair best with your Icelandic arctic char.
Drinks
One of the newest additions to the County’s landscape, Slake Brewing serves up refreshing suds while offering stunning views of the local countryside. Perched atop a hill just outside of Picton, Slake is an ideal spot for a nightcap or day visit.
To start, try the Mosey Pilsner or Hatch Pale Ale.
