This past weekend, the oldest and arguably most iconic independent movie theatre to operate in Calgary, The Plaza Theatre, officially welcomed patrons back after a long pandemic-induced hiatus.
The historic Kensington cinema has been a longstanding fixture in Calgary culture since it originally opened in 1935, and while the recently-refurbished space has managed to retain its charm, it now offers a slew of new features for Calgarians to enjoy alongside their film viewing experience.
In addition to a vibrant and vintage-aesthetic lobby space and concession stand, the Plaza now boasts a cool new all-day cafe and cocktail bar where guests will be able to order a selection of craft beers, cocktails, and coffee, along with food from local food and beverage businesses like Empire Provisions and Our Daily Brett.
The Plaza also plans to feature a permanent food truck just outside of the main building with residencies rotating every couple of months, as well as a new patio space that will likely open sometime in early spring.
The Plaza Theatre is open Fridays from 4 to 11 p.m.
